Robert Furno, MD, MPH, MBA, FACEP
Medical Director, Government Solutions (Medicare)
Dr. Furno is the Medical Director of Government Solutions (Medicare) for AIM Specialty Health® (AIM). He works closely with executive leadership to supply clinical expertise for our government unit to help health plans navigate the complexities of government compliance requirements and ensure evidence-based, affordable care for their beneficiaries.
Prior to AIM, Dr. Furno was the Chief Medical Officer at Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the Upper Midwest. In that role, he provided medical oversight for myriad CMS divisions and product lines, including: survey and certification with a focus on EMTALA, Medicaid and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program) and the Center for Program Integrity. He also was Medical Officer for multiple CMMI (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations) programs including: bundled payment programs, Accountable Care Organization models, and other alternative payment models. Dr. Furno served as the National Medical Officer for Improvement Activities developing policy under the Merit Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), a component of the Quality Payments Program (QPP).
Previously, he served as the Associate Medical Director and Attending Physician at Emcare-Advocate Trinity Hospital and as an Assistant Professor and Attending Physician at University of Texas at Houston. He completed a fellowship in International and Disaster Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and was a Resident Physician in Emergency Medicine at Resurrection Medical Center. Board certified in Emergency Medicine, Dr. Furno continues to practice as a Clinical Assistant Professor of the UIC Emergency Medicine Residency Program and as an Attending Physician at Advocate Aurora Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
He graduated from medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and received his Master in Public Health, focused on Health Policy, from the University of Illinois Chicago. In addition, Dr. Furno received a Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, with an emphasis on Healthcare Enterprises and International Business. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Platteville.
